“What we see depends mainly on what we look for.”
John Lubbock
What a great quote! It made me think about how clients must feel when they have a professional organizer visit their home for the first time. They often worry about what the organizer will think of them since their home (or maybe just one room or a closet) is in disarray. Bringing order back to disorganized and cluttered areas is the expertise of an organizer, right? As an organizer, I often hear from neighbors and new acquaintances, “I can’t let you see my home,” or “I can only let you come in the front room – the rest of the house is too messy!” (My real friends know I can see it all…and not judge!). What clients may not realize is that I am like them – I am not perfect! I admit it – there are days when I just don’t have the energy or desire to wash one more load of laundry or to put away all the stuff where it needs to go! There, I said it. So, please don’t think I am perfect and I can’t bear to see your stuff simply because I call myself a professional organizer. I just want to help you bring order and peace back to your home. When I walk into your home, it’s almost like I put on x-ray vision goggles.
I can see through the stacks of boxes and papers…and the piles of clothes in the chair and the floor in the bedroom… and even the towers of toys. What I see is the wonderful potential of what lies below and behind the stuff. Now, isn’t that exciting?
