There are many choices for children’s and teen’s rooms as they are now major decision-makers in decorating their rooms. I wish I would have been so lucky! After much persuasion, I finally talked my parents into a red plaid comforter and solid red curtains for my bedroom when I was growing up. (This was in about 1977 and I was a young teen – in case you are questioning my choices!). Take a look at the Pottery Barn Teen and Pottery Barn Kids catalogues if you aren’t sure about kids’ influence on home decor these days. It can be a bit daunting when your daughter wants feathers and sparkles…oh, and surfing-themed bedding! So how do you put it all together? Start simple. Pick bedding in your child’s favorite colors (hopefully, they coordinate and there are no more than 3!). Also try to keep wall color simple. This doesn’t mean “boring,” but stick to a simple palate. It’s easier to change pillows and curtains than paint color! Here are some great ideas from HGTV.com.

Need some ideas for art in your child’s room? I particularly enjoy having kids create their own art. An artist canvas and some acrylic paints can be picked up inexpensively at arts and crafts stores. A child’s or teen’s artwork certainly adds a personal touch. Of course, not all kids / teens want to paint, so enjoy these other ideas.

Most importantly, don’t try to create the room you want without working with your child to make it happen. Have fun planning the room with your child and everyone will be happy in the end!
